In confirmation of my telegram of the 8th instant
which was as follows:-
*Sassoons inform me that 2nd August twenty balls Patna opium seized Shamshui after payment in full duty likin same date two chests of opium in transit seized Suntong Sanning district after payment in full duty likin owner arrested sent to Canton fined 1850 taele opium has been retained Kuang Yuan Office Sun- tong please make strong protest against illegal seizure".
I have the honour to forward the enclosed copy of a memorandum
which was handed to this Government on the 8th instant by Mr.
Levy and to request Your Excellency to be good enough to make
a strong protest against these flagrant violations of the opium
treaties by the Canton Government.
